At DeSonie Roofing, we’ve seen it all the past few weeks — snow, freezing temps, ice buildup, then warmer weather with rain… and now we’re looking at snow again. This kind of temperature swing can be HARD on your roof. Here’s why:
When snow and ice melt during warmer days, water seeps into small cracks and gaps. When temperatures drop again, that water refreezes and expands — making those cracks bigger. Over time, this can loosen shingles, flashing, and seals.

Melting snow that refreezes at the roof’s edge can create ice dams. These trap water behind them, forcing it under shingles and potentially causing leaks inside your home.
Snow + rain back-to-back means your roof decking and underlayment are dealing with prolonged moisture exposure. If there were any weak spots before winter, they’re likely showing now.

Rapid temperature changes cause materials to expand and contract. This movement can weaken seals around chimneys, vents, and valleys — common leak areas.
